The town broke down without a trace.
For the record, I'm giving lectures
on metal and concrete rubbled into rock,
in hopes to show you where it's safe to walk.
I snapshot ancient tracks and traces:
Each picture's worth a thousand lectures
giving hints of unpredicted structures,
where once we thought we walked on solid rock.

But can we trust our honest work showcases
every trace such fractures every took?
Every model's trumped by new conjectures
and all we know is what we always thought.
Ostensibly, I'm putting on this lecture
to demonstrate the places you can safely walk:
to demonstrate the broken tracks and traces
across metal, concrete, rubble, virgin rock.

Each picture holds at least a thousand textures
some show victims of unpredicted fractures
some record the breaking trails each fracture took.

But every model's trumped by fresh conjectures
and all we know is what we always thought.

Although we thought we walked on solid rock
the place broke down without a trace, leaving us
with only words and other useless gestures.
