We expected robots,
Easy interplanetary flight.
We'd be wearing silver,
We might live forever,
We would soon surpass the speed of light.
No more mass starvation,
Slim the population.
Energy directly from the sun.
No more television.
Telepathic vision -
Everyone connects to everyone.
In a dream I saw it,
Or read it in a comic:
Science had the answer, had the plan.
Youthful sense of wonder
Killed by greed and plunder;
The boy is superseded by the man
Is it pessimism
To call this Earth a prison?
Or is it simply cold reality?
Shuttle flights aborted,
Fossil fuels exhausted,
The future isn't what it used to be.
